There’s a Big Hole in Confined Space Entry Training
There is a big hole in Confined Space Entry training (pun intended). While required by law, it almost never covers the operation of the Gas Monitor – the very tool that keeps the worker safe!
Here’s an analogy: Confined Space Entry training is like Classroom Driver’s Education. Gas Monitor Operation Training is Behind-the-Wheel Instruction. Would you give the keys to someone who’s only had the former but not the latter?
Confined Space Entry training alone can leave workers (and employers) with a false sense of security. It is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY that workers understand how to use their gas detector. It’s no exaggeration to say that it’s life and death.
Most gas detector manufacturers do training upon the sale of monitors but are spread too thin to do training except for the largest users. When new workers are hired, or a refresher is needed, Safety leaders need to contact companies that specialize in Gas Monitor Competence Training. Searchable on Google, they typically charge the cost of one gas detector to train up to 20 workers in about two hours.
We’re biased, but the leader by far is at www.gasmonitorcompetence.com 626-209-9644, who’s been doing training worldwide in four languages since 1999.
Why don’t providers of Confined Space Entry training provide Gas Detector Operation Training? See the next article to find out.
